Every day, we put over 100,000 chemicals on our skin. Every day, our skin absorbs sixty percent of these chemicals. Everything from toothpaste to shampoo to dish washing soap touches our skins. All of these things are made with chemicals; most have which have not been studied by the FDA for safety levels of long-term exposure. The FDA does not regulate personal care products like soap, deodorant, toothpaste or makeup of any kind. Every last one of these things is comprised almost entirely of chemicals. Some of these chemicals are by products of manufacture or storage, so they don’t show up on the labels due to a loophole in the labeling laws.
There are various places on the web that will tell how to make organic soaps and cleaning products. For cosmetics, however, there are not nearly as many. Choose a truly pure personal product. Choose only those products which contain no water, which carry the USDA’s Organic Seal, and the Natural Products Association’s Natural Seal. Without these two distinct seals, and the fact that there is absolutely no water on the labeling, you are only bathing your delicate and important skin in chemicals.
Skin is the body’s largest organ. It is the first line against viruses and germs. An unhealthy or bad-looking skin is also the first sign of almost every disease, condition, or drug interaction known to humankind. Skin allows us to sense when danger is near, by standing the hair on the backs of our necks at full attention, by letting us feel the sensations of heat and cold. It breaks out in rashes and hives to tell us we shouldn’t eat or drink a substance or food. After all the work our skin does to protect us, shouldn’t we be careful what we rub into it, wash it with, and soak it in, so that we protect our skin?
So why use harsh chemicals on our skin? Most of us use them because we simply are not educated about the function of our skin, or what we are putting on ourselves every day. We should be looking for natural organic products to use to clean our homes, our clothes and ourselves. If we choose to wear makeup or use beauty products, we should be using natural and organic products. Skin should be nourished from the inside out with organic, natural foods and plenty of water. It can be nourished from the outside in, with good organic beauty products. Doesn’t our wonderful, protective skin deserve the best from us?
