“How to Design and Deliver an Effective Board Orientation”

This training, presented by Karen Foster of Organizational Consulting, was a smash hit for executive directors and board members at our April 2 workshop in Portland.  Read what the critics are saying:

“This is great! Helps to clarify ideas and have a good road map.”

“Well-organized & clear.”

“Concise!”

“Great morning!  Time well spent – thank you!”

“Learned a lot.  Going to do a presentation to the board for change.”

“Thanks for all you do.  You rock!”

“The Board Network seminars continue to be outstanding—thank you to the staff for putting these together!

Who should attend:  Board members with responsibility for board development, nominations and governance; Executive Directors.

One of the most important roles for a board of directors is the recruitment and training of new board members.  A cohesive, high-functioning board depends on members who understand their jobs as board members.  Unfortunately, many boards do not realize the value of a well-thought-out process of bringing on new board members and preparing them for their governance role. This workshop will give you the knowledge and tools to develop a great board member recruitment and orientation process for your non-profit organization.

You will learn how to:

  • Make the most of your board members and help them get up to speed quickly
  • Assess the effectiveness of your organization's orientation process
  • Design an orientation for a new organization…or re-vamp an existing program
  • Put together a useful board of directors handbook
  • Minimize the chances of board members feeling they don't "fit in"
  • Avoid common mistakes when recruiting people to your board

Come to this workshop to learn how you can prepare your board members to contribute to the strategic leadership of the organization from day one.  Participants will receive handouts they can put to use immediately.

The workshop is presented by Karen Foster, a long-time volunteer and currently a consultant to organizations on governance matters.  She combines her business career, her training with BoardSource, and her own board experiences to offer an informative and practical workshop.
